There are two possibilities for this awkwardness:

1. He likes you, too, and he doesn't know how to carry himself around you. So he is polite, and extra distant.

2. He doesn't like you, but he knows that you like him, and doesn't know how to go about breaking your heart. So he is polite, and extra distant.


Either way, there really isn't much to do but to retreat and keep a peaceful distance so as to avoid such awkward moments. Either way, it hurts.
